Starting counseling can feel like a big step—especially when you aren’t sure what will happen once you arrive. You may wonder what to say, whether you’ll be expected to share everything immediately or if talking about difficult experiences will leave you feeling worse.
The good news is that your first appointment is designed to help you feel comfortable, understood and supported. You don’t need to prepare the perfect explanation or have everything figured out before you begin.

Before Your Appointment
Before your first session, you may be asked to complete paperwork about your health history, current concerns, insurance and what you hope to receive from counseling.
If you plan to use insurance, review our insurance information and contact your provider to confirm your behavioral-health benefits. You can also explore our counselor profiles to learn more about each clinician’s experience, specialties and approach.
Inspire offers in-person appointments in Midland and Mt. Pleasant, along with virtual counseling throughout Michigan. You can review our locations before your visit.
What Happens During the First Session?
Your first appointment is primarily a conversation. Your counselor will take time to get to know you and better understand what brought you to therapy.
They may ask about:
- What you are currently experiencing
- Important relationships and life experiences
- Changes or challenges you have recently faced
- What you would like to improve
- What you hope counseling will help you accomplish
You are not expected to tell your entire life story in one session. You can share at your own pace, ask questions and let your counselor know if there is something you aren’t ready to discuss.
Your counselor will also explain confidentiality, including the limited circumstances when information may need to be shared for safety or legal reasons.

Will Counseling Make Me Feel Worse?
Some people leave their first appointment feeling relieved because they have finally said something out loud. Others feel thoughtful, tired or uncertain about what comes next. There is no “correct” reaction.
The goal of the first session isn’t to solve everything. It is to help you feel heard, establish trust and begin creating a plan that feels manageable.
What If My Counselor Doesn’t Feel Like the Right Fit?
A strong connection with your counselor matters. It may take more than one appointment to feel completely comfortable, but you should feel respected, listened to and able to be yourself.
If the relationship doesn’t feel right, that does not mean counseling isn’t for you. It may simply mean another clinician or approach would be a better fit. Inspire’s diverse team provides support for teens, adults, couples and families across a variety of counseling services.
You Don’t Have to Have Everything Figured Out
Beginning counseling does not mean you are weak, broken or failing. It means you are choosing to give yourself support while working through something that matters.
You only need to arrive as you are. Your counselor will help you take the next step from there.
