Is Addiction a Disease or a Choice?

When it comes to addiction, there’s still a great deal of misunderstanding—and with that misunderstanding comes stigma. One of the most common and harmful misconceptions is that addiction is a moral failure or a result of poor choices. But science, experience, and compassion tell us otherwise: addiction is a disease, not a choice.

🧠 Addiction is a disease—let’s treat it like one. In this powerful TED Talk, former Director of National Drug Control Policy, Michael Botticelli, shares why compassion—not judgment—is the key to recovery.

Only 1 in 9 people in the U.S. get the treatment they need. It’s time to change that by ending the stigma and supporting real, healing-centered care.

Understanding Addiction as a Disease

Addiction is classified as a chronic brain disease that affects how the brain processes reward, motivation, memory, and behavior. Over time, substance use can change brain chemistry, making it increasingly difficult for a person to stop—even when they want to.

Just like heart disease or diabetes, addiction has:

  • Recognizable symptoms
  • Underlying biological and environmental causes
  • Effective treatments

This doesn’t mean personal responsibility disappears, but it does mean that shame, blame, and judgment have no place in recovery. Instead, we must turn toward evidence-based care and empathy.

Why the “Choice” Narrative Is Harmful

Saying addiction is a choice implies that someone can simply choose not to be addicted. That mindset ignores the powerful changes that occur in the brain during addiction—and it feeds the cycle of shame that prevents many from seeking help.

It also fosters stigma, both from others and within ourselves. Many people struggling with addiction experience internalized stigma, believing they’re weak, broken, or unworthy of recovery. This kind of thinking can damage self-esteem, increase stress, and delay treatment—all of which worsen the condition.

Treatment Works—And Recovery Is Possible

The good news? Addiction is treatable. With the right support, people can and do recover.

At Inspire Counseling & Wellness, we understand the complex nature of addiction. Our experienced and compassionate team offers individual counseling, relapse prevention strategies, and mental health support tailored to your journey. Whether you’re just beginning to explore your relationship with substances or you’ve been in recovery for years, you are not alone—and you are never beyond hope.

Words Matter—Let’s End the Stigma

The way we talk about addiction matters. Replacing terms like “addict” or “junkie” with “person with a substance use disorder” reinforces the truth: addiction is not who someone is—it’s something they are experiencing. Language can either reinforce stigma or open the door to healing.
