How To Handle Anxiety

Anxiety can have many triggers, and identifying them is one of the most important steps to coping with it.

Here are some ways to manage anxiety:

  • Stress management techniques.
    • These include exercise, mindfulness, and meditation. Regular aerobic exercise, such as walking or jogging, can help reduce anxiety. Other activities that can help include tai chi, yoga, or dancing.
  • Breathing techniques.
    • Sit comfortably and raise your ribcage to expand your chest. Place one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen. You can also try 3-3-3 breathing, which is a simple technique that you can use to calm down quickly. Breathe in deeply for three seconds, hold your breath for another three seconds, and then gently exhale for three seconds. This pattern helps you focus on your breathing and slows down your heart rate, making you feel more relaxed. It’s a great tool to use when you’re feeling anxious or stressed and need a quick way to regain your calm.
  • Deep sleep.
    • High-quality sleep can help reduce the risk of anxiety. Deep sleep, also known as non-rapid eye movement (NREM) can help calm and reset the anxious brain by reorganizing connections in the brain. Studies have found that people who got more deep sleep had less anxiety the following day, and that a sleepless night can increase anxiety by up to 30%.
  • Peer support.
    • Peer support brings together people who’ve had similar experiences to support each other. You can contact a special organizations in your area or counseling services.
  • Other techniques.
    • Other ways how to handle anxiety include relaxation techniques, dietary adjustments, learning to be assertive, building self-esteem, cognitive therapy, exposure therapy, structured problem solving, medication, and journaling.

One of the best things you can do to manage your anxiety, is to learn about anxiety. Talk to a healthcare provider or counselor in your area to find out what might be causing your condition and what treatments might be best for you.
