How One Counselor Is Expanding Access to Mental Health Care in Africa

Healing doesn’t happen in isolation. It grows through connection, community, and the courage to care for one another. Few people embody this more than Krista McCowen, MA, LPC, a counselor at Inspire Counseling and Wellness, who has extended her passion for mental health far beyond her counseling office.

Krista is the founder of Ubuntu Wellness, a nonprofit organization providing accessible, culturally rooted mental health support to underserved communities across Africa. Her work is a powerful reminder that one person’s healing can ripple outward—across families, neighborhoods, and even continents.

Ubuntu Wellness: Mental Health Rooted in Community

Ubuntu Wellness is built on the African philosophy of Ubuntu, often translated as “I am because we are.” This belief—that our wellbeing is interconnected—guides every program the organization offers.

Ubuntu Wellness focuses on:

  • Community wellness workshops that teach stress management, resilience-building, and connection.
  • School-based programs that bring emotional education and mental health support directly into classrooms.
  • Global volunteer engagement through storytelling, outreach, and resource development.
  • 1:1 services and Ubuntu circles where individuals and groups can process trauma, grief, and life transitions in culturally sensitive spaces.

At its core, Ubuntu Wellness exists to restore hope, heal hearts, and empower communities through programs that honor culture, identity, and lived experience.

From Counselor to Global Mental Health Advocate

Krista’s work as a licensed professional counselor has always centered on increasing access to healing and support. Her time in Rwanda strengthened that commitment, revealing a tremendous need for trauma-informed, community-based mental health resources.

Ubuntu Wellness grew from that calling—shifting from a response to a single need into a broader movement for mental health equity across Africa.

Why Global Mental Health Equity Matters

Many communities around the world live with the effects of trauma, poverty, and conflict without reliable access to mental health care. Ubuntu Wellness helps close these gaps by:

  • Providing culturally informed care that honors local traditions and wisdom
  • Partnering with community leaders and schools to build sustainable programs
  • Offering tools that help people understand their emotions, build resilience, and support one another
  • Mental health is not a luxury. It is a human right—and no one should have to navigate their healing journey alone.

How Inspire Counseling and Wellness Supports Krista’s Global Mission

While this story belongs to Krista and Ubuntu Wellness, we are honored to support her work by:

  • Recognizing her leadership and advocacy
  • Sharing Ubuntu Wellness’s mission with our clients and community
  • Encouraging those who feel inspired to learn more or get involved

Krista’s example embodies the essence of community-centered care and serves as a reminder of what’s possible when compassion extends beyond borders.

January “Sponsor-a-Mile” Fundraiser

This January, Ubuntu Wellness is launching a Sponsor-a-Mile” Fundraiser to support its 2026 goals, including trauma-healing workshops, school-based initiatives, and direct services.

Each donation represents “miles” of healing, hope, and empowerment—moving Ubuntu Wellness closer to its $6,000 goal and expanding access to care across Africa.

If you’ve wondered how to support mental health globally, this is a meaningful place to start.

Ways to Support Ubuntu Wellness

If Krista’s vision resonates with you, here are simple ways to get involved:

  • Donate to the January Sponsor-a-Mile Fundraiser or make a one-time or monthly gift
  • Share Ubuntu Wellness on your social media or with friends, family, or faith communities
  • Explore partnership opportunities, especially if you are a mental health professional, organization, or community group interested in becoming part of their network of global wellness allies.
  • Follow along and stay informed by visiting their website, joining their newsletter, or purchasing merchandise from their online shop, where proceeds support their mission.

Your support directly fuels free and low-cost mental health services in communities with limited access.

One Hour, One Heart: Turning Counseling Work Into Global Impact

Ubuntu Wellness also invites counselors and practices to participate in One Hour, One Heart, a program where providers donate a small portion of their session fees (e.g., $1–$10 per clinical hour) to support ongoing services in Africa.

Participants:

  • Join a network of professionals committed to mental health equity
  • Contribute regularly through a secure portal
  • Receive updates and impact stories
  • Are recognized as global wellness partners
  • For many clinicians, it’s a simple, sustainable way to align daily work with global healing.

When We Heal Together, We Thrive Together

We are incredibly proud of Krista—as a counselor, a leader, and an individual committed to expanding access to culturally rooted mental health care. Through Ubuntu Wellness, the truth we see in therapy every day is being lived out across the globe: when one person heals, communities heal alongside them.
